Exploring Shibuya: Shibuya Scramble Crossing, Sky views, Activity

When we made our way to Tonkatsu Maisen in Shibuya Hikarie for lunch, we decided to dedicate the afternoon to exploring Shibuya’s highlights. Of course, the Shibuya Scramble Crossing was at the top of our list!
Dubbed one of the busiest and most famous intersections in the world, this place is iconic for a reason. It’s one of those spots you can’t skip when visiting Tokyo. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, the chaotic yet mesmerizing energy here is unforgettable.

1. How to Get to Shibuya Scramble Crossing

If you’re arriving at Shibuya Station, head for the Hachiko Exit.
Once you step out of the Hachiko Exit, you’ll see the Hachiko Statue—a lovely spot that honors Japan’s most loyal dog and a popular meeting point.
From there, just follow the flow of the crowd, and within moments, you’ll find yourself at Shibuya Scramble Crossing!

Pro tip: Don’t make the same mistake we did and assume any exit will lead you directly to the crossing (oops).

2. Best Photo Spots for Shibuya Scramble

This intersection isn’t just for walking across (though that’s a fun experience too!). It’s also a prime spot for some Instagram-worthy shots. Here are the top spots for snapping those perfect pics:

1) Starbucks at Shibuya Tsutaya

If you’ve ever seen dramatic overhead shots of the crossing, they were probably taken from this Starbucks. Located in the Tsutaya building, it has huge floor-to-ceiling windows offering an unbeatable view of the intersection.

Pro tip: The second floor is where you want to be for the best angle. Grab a coffee, settle in by the window, and snap away. It’s like people-watching but on a whole other level.
Bonus: Sometimes, you might spot folks in the crossing taking pictures of you up in the window. It’s a full-on “picture-in-picture” situation!

b) In the Action: The Crossing Itself

For a more immersive experience, become one of the many pedestrians crossing the street. When the light turns green, hundreds of people move in all directions—it’s a beautifully chaotic moment that’s so Tokyo.

Pro tip: The best photos here are during the evening when the neon lights start glowing. That said, always respect traffic rules and prioritize safety (and others’ convenience) over the perfect shot.

3. Shibuya Sky: Tokyo’s Best Night View

Shibuya Sky

After soaking up the vibes at Shibuya Scramble, we highly recommend heading up to Shibuya Sky, a rooftop observation deck located at the Shibuya Scramble Square building.

From here, you’ll get sweeping panoramic views of Tokyo, with the crossing below as a glittering centerpiece. The experience feels magical, especially at night when the city transforms into a sea of lights.

Tips for Visiting Shibuya Sky:
Book in Advance: This is a super popular spot, so reservations are a must.
Save on Tickets: Platforms like Klook and KKday often have discounted rates. At the time of writing, Klook even has a 10% discount for their Paradise Lounge package, so make sure to check for deals!

4. Bonus Activity: Go-Karting Through Shibuya

As we were strolling around the crossing, something unexpected caught our eye—groups of people in Mario Kart-style go-karts zipping through the streets of Shibuya!

If you’ve ever wanted to live out your childhood video game dreams, this is your chance. Known as “Shibuya Go-Karts” or “Mario Kart Tokyo,” it’s one of the most fun and unique activities you can try in the city.
